Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module is set at A1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). To provide students with an introduction to the German-speaking countries as physical, cultural and political entities. To give an overview of the major social and cultural developments in the German-speaking countries of Europe in the 19th and early 20th century. To introduce students to the academic study of the German language, its historical, social and structural dimensions. To provide communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) at a basic level in German through the introduction and practice of simple grammatical structures, functions and vocabulary. To introduce students to autonomous language-learning methods.

Syllabus:

This syllabus is set at A1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Lecture: The German language, its history and relationship with other languages; political geography of the German speaking countries; sociocultural and historical background to the German-speaking countries of Europe in the 19th and early 20th century Tutorials: Working with the set textbook, back-up audio-visual and online materials, students are introduced to the concepts of gender, number and case and to the basic structures of the German language. Students are also made aware of approaches to language learning, including developments of autonomous learning skills, exploitation of reference material and dictionaries, etc. Language Laboratory: Consolidation is provided through ICT and language laboratory work, and students are expected to make full use of all laboratory facilities in their private language study.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: Engage with, and respond appropriately to, spoken and written German-language texts on everyday topics. Express themselves appropriately and accurately in spoken and written form on topics relating to their own lives. Discuss basic aspects of the German-language cultures and societies. Structure and assess their own learning independent of the language classroom.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: Conduct basic conversations in German in a number of simulated environments. Use comprehensible German pronunciation and intonation.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module consists of a lecture common to all Humanities and Business students studying German, plus four classroom hours and one hour in the language laboratory; these hours combine the development of linguistic and cultural knowledge relating to German-speaking countries. Students will be engaged in active learning both inside and outside the classroom and will be encouraged to develop autonomous language learning strategies.
